Moving House Made Easy

Almost 12% of people found moving so traumatic they vowed never to do it again, according to a study by Clysedale Bank. Susan Williams of the Finishing Touch, an Australian pre-moving and home unpacking service, offers these trauma-reducing tips:

Pack a survival kit

A kettle with tea and coffee will come in bandy first up plus toiletries, a change of clothing, a telephone handset, pet leads and a first-aid kit. " At least you can have a drink in the new house, take the dogs for a walk in their new neigbourhood and make s few phonecalls" says William.

Pack essentials together

Put all those "easy to misplace" items like remote controls, bed legs, shelf supports, keys to furniture cabinets and reassembly instructions in one carton.

Check your garden and secret hiding spots

Tools, hoses, hose reels and shed items can get left behind. Don't forget items tucked under the stairs, in the roof cavity even secret stashes of jewellery or valueables that you may have hidden under floorboards or behind walls.
